Chauvinist Man

馃挭 Rude and irritable were the main characteristics of an undesirable man in his own family. His name was Walter Morel, a miner but drinker who was usually aggressive with his family. Nonetheless, for some instances, he was ashamed and tried to be good with his family, but that just lasted a while, and then he returned to his bad character. To illustrate, once, he arrived home late and drunk, and he got very angry with his wife at the point that he flanged a drawer at her, cutting her forehead on the drawer’s corner. But the worst thing was that Walter said that the quarrel and everything that happened in their marriage was Gertrude’s fault. He was aggressive with her not only physically but also mentally. So, he was the only responsible for making his wife lose interest on him and give all her attention to her favorite sons. Furthermore, he himself, with his bad behavior, pressed his sons and wife to put him out of his own family.

Reap what you sow

In life, we cannot expect to receive something we do not give to others, especially family. Walter Morel was a great example of a self-seeking person. He wanted to have their family’s attention and love, but he did not provide that to them. He created an uncomfortable environment that nobody wanted to stay close to him. Moreover, even their own sons did not like to tell him anything that happened to them. For instance, when William was accused of ripping Alfred’s collar, Walter got aggressively angry at him showing not a shred of mercy to him like Gertrude did. He sowed that hatred and disgust from his children towards him. Nobody stood being with him as he made them feel uncomfortable. Mrs. Morel level of happiness steadily declined over their years of marriage, and the same was for the children as all of them were in the same boat. Thus, although he wanted to be different with his family, it was too late to change what he sowed on them and to change what they felt for him.

Real Life

This book shows us real familiar issues that had happened for years and still happen nowadays. It can be seen how lots of families live like the Morel’s. There are lots of women that know they are living with a quarrelsome man that even do not offer enough money and attention to maintain a family. But sometimes, these women get pregnant with more and more children even when they know they are not able in any way to raise more children. That is just indignant. Therefore, those who pay the price for parents' decisions are children inasmuch as some kids are obligated to work at an early age in order to contribute to their families, like William and Paul did at the age of thirteen and fourteen years old. Chauvinism is one of the reasons families are destroyed. Hence, nobody deserves to feel inferior to others in any way. Nobody deserves to feel unloved and insecure in their own family. So, Family has to be the great agent of love to have a different generation.
